However this strategic intent only becomes a reality when Directors make the time, and have the capability and support infrastructure to make it happen.

What is often overlooked is the need for the Director/s to be at least involved, playing some part of the improvement initiative and at best, to also “invest” in their own personal development. Spending time out of the office sitting on 'off the shelf' generic 'courses' is often hard to justify and invariably proves to be a contentious issue with disappointing benefit and return. A more practical and cost effective means of developing the capabilities of senior executives, which allows them to focus on their own challenges, is for them to work with an experienced Executive Mentor.

The Coach / Mentor works alongside the Director, ideally on a specific project to measure the impact and return on investment. The role of the Mentor is not “to do all the doing” but rather to guide, nurture, advise, challenge and impart knowledge; so helping the Director(s) improve their capabilities, positively impacting their own well being as well as the organisation's performance.
